The Wisconsin River is what first drew settlers to this Central Wisconsin area during the middle of the 1800s. Known as Big Bull Flats or Big Bull Falls by the native Chippewa Indians, a treaty was formed in 1836 that transferred the land to federal ownership. In 1840 George Stevens (who also founded the city of Stevens Point to the south of Wausau) began processing the pine forests into lumber and subsequently, other sawmills along the Wisconsin River began to spring up as well. By 1846 Walter McIndoe arrived, taking the lead in the local business and community. His efforts helped, in part, to establish Marathon County in 1850.
In 1983, an eight-block enclosed shopping mall was built downtown; while still successful, is rapidly losing ground to suburban developments. By the middle and late 1990s, the city of Wausau began to purchase and develop more of the West Industrial Park to meet the needs of the expanding economy and companies. And today, with its redeveloped downtown area, Wausau is as exciting and active as ever.
